Introduction

Aeromexico has always had a strong domestic presence.  It has also been known as one of its country’s farthest reaching airlines.  Until just a few years ago, it was the only Mexican airline to fly to Asia and Europe.  As one of the founding members of the Sky Team alliance, it is major airline amongst North America’s legacy carriers.

Aeromexico began its life in 1934.  It quickly rose to prominence with the help of Pan-Am, which was a major investor.  Service grew as the airline took over other Mexican carriers.  It was nationalized in the 1970s, but has suffered from several downswings since, downsizing its fleet and returning to the private sector.  After its sale in 2007, the airline has begun to grow and is Mexico’s largest domestic and second largest international carrier.

Strengths
  • Great domestic reach
  • Regular service to the US
  • Member of Sky Team alliance (great miles-earning potential)
  • Good service (especially on larger aircraft)

Weaknesses
  • Flights to the US usually do not include international flight perks (like extra baggage allowances)
  • Has a history of financial trouble
  • High extra baggage fees for flights from the US ($40 for second checked piece)

Frequent Flier Program and Airport Lounges

Aeromexico offers Salones Premier (lounges for premium class passengers) locations at airports throughout Mexico, with multiple facilities in Mexico City. Their Club Premier program allows frequent fliers to earn miles regularly. Also, members of any other Sky Team airline earn 100% of the miles flown when flying on Aeromexico.

Conclusion

Aeromexico is a good choice for fliers who are traveling domestically in Mexico or who are flying from the US to Mexico. Also, Aeromexico has good prices on flights from Mexico to Spain, China and Japan. The airline gives Mexico-bound fliers a second airline choice (Mexicana is the most known carrier in the country) and can sometimes offer better deals than its competition. The overall quality of an Aeromexicco experience is basically on par with that offered by US legacy carriers, though not comparable to the world’s best airlines.
